"Li Youran"

Li Youran, 19 inside the People's University, Beijing, 1999. Li Youran was a fan of several local punk bands.

Biography: I’m a self-taught photographer who read Chinese at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. From 1998-9 I studied at Beijing Normal University, during that time I documented the city’s underground punk scene, as well as places I travelled to around China. Since graduating in 2001, I’ve lived between China and the UK and been employed variously as a gallery assistant, writer, editor, researcher, and translator. All the while I’ve continued taking pictures. I’m currently based in Shanghai where I’ve completed a photo book about the city and the author J.G....
